Review of 2019

Inspired by George over at "Musings on Wargaming and Life" I'm taking a brief look back over 2019 from a gaming perspective... It's certainly been quite a varied year of painting & modelling projects!  World War 2 has been the front runner with my DAK army getting ever larger.  Plenty of new additions for my desert terrain too.  Really enjoying this project.  Plus I dipped my toe in to Eastern Front gaming by starting to pick up a few figures for a Russian army.  Some of my "French/Belgian" scenery got a bit of a makeover and several new buildings were added.  I have quite a lot of scenery for this theatre but it's still good to keep adding more; Colin at Charlie Foxtrot keeps me well supplied with kits.  Also, my existing WW2 forces (Paras, Panzergrenadiers and British Regulars) all got a few bits and bobs - no army is ever truly complete! I briefly dallied with Warlords of Erewhon but after a couple of games I decided that it wasn't my thi...

Bossfest and Bovington Show 2018

Image
Every year in July Battlegroup South host a splendid wargames show at the Bovington Tank Museum .  This year the show overlaps with the excellent "Bossfest" run by Scott from Boss Minis .  Now in it's fourth year, Bossfest actually actually runs from Thursday to Sunday.  Basically a group of easy-going, like-minded wargamers camp in a woodland clearing and play a wide variety of wargames and boardgames in the huge marquees.  In the evening there's music, a camp fire and (to be frank) quite a lot of beer and cider too! What a beautiful place to camp and play wargames! The weather this year made the event a real treat.  The secluded location really makes you feel like you're getting away from it all. Charlie Foxtrot does "glamping" ;o) Colin kindly let me share his tent.  It's an "air bridge" tent - basically the traditional poles are replaced by air filled beams that give the tent it's rigid structure.  Peg it out, pump it u...

Bristol Big Uns Club Night

Image
Sunday night is club night for the Bristol Big Uns and we really couldn't ask for a better venue than the superb Iron Acton village hall. We've recently splashed out on some of the new mouse pad style gaming mats and very good they are too. My visit on Sunday last was only a flying visit but it was still great to catch up with everyone and have a little natter. I couldn't resist taking a few pics to share. First we have a game of Lion Rampant between Mike and Simon. The figures are all Mike's (20mm Zvezda I think), I reckon they look splendid! The beauty of this game is that you don't need masses of figures and you can fit a couple of games in to an evening. This has rather caught my imagination :o) French vs English Both sides getting stuck in! What beautiful knights! Archers and billmen Next is a very characterful game of Kings of War between Dave S and Dave G. It's Forces of Nature trying to thwart the advance of the shambling Undead. ...

Better Storage for My WW2 Troops

Image
I've been having a very cathartic clear out and tidy up; and as part of this I've decided to re-organise how I've been storing my WW2 troops. I've ordered a bunch of Really Useful Boxes but in the mean time I picked up a couple of 4 litre boxes from WH Smith. Old storage solution The figures (mostly individually based) were stored in the old GW cases with foam trays. Well protected but a bit fiddly. So, with some of the 'teams' already mag-based I decided to go the whole hog and mag-base the lot. To line the boxes I needed some steel paper so on Easter Monday afternoon I placed an order with Trevor at Magnetic Displays / Coritani . Within about 15 minutes (I jest not!) I received an email from Trevor saying that the items would be in the post first thing on Tuesday morning. Sure enough on Wednesday morning the order arrived! You simply cannot get better customer service than that. A good price and excellent product too. Highly recommended! I already have ...
